Choosing the right mattress

Vertical and functional space planning is an area often overlooked in the typical household interior design layout. Yet you can actually double the functional space in bedrooms by thinking vertically as well as horizontally, in three dimensions instead of two!

In other words, consider the space above your head as well as the space around you. This will result in more effective space planning and interior design. Great functional bedding and storage solutions exist that will allow you to easily double the floor space in a bedroom and increase storage options.

A guest room should not go to waste when you don’t have guests, either. Put a futon in the guest room and fold it down into a bed only when you are expecting guests. The rest of the time, use it as a den, library, sewing room, music room, or getaway space with the futon folded up as a couch.

A loft bed is great in the room of an older child or adolescent. It provides a superior functional solution for increasing the space in the room. A desk can be put under the bed to provide a quiet and private atmosphere for study. Or the desk can be put across the room from the bed and a sofa can be put under the bed to serve as a comfortable place to sit with friends and hang out socially. The sofa could also serve as a guest bed for having a friend over to spend the night.

When two younger children share a room, bunk beds are a logical solution for making use of vertical space. They will have more room for playtime and storing their toys. You’ll want to be sure to select quality bunk beds that meet all the safety standards and have rules against horseplay on the beds. Also, the youngest child should be assigned the lower bunk.

Murphy beds are ideal for studios and one-bedroom apartments. A Murphy bed folds up against the wall or inside a closet-like space when not in use. Designed for use in a limited space, installing a Murphy bed will instantly open up floor space and make you feel like you’ve just added a whole new room! You can also install a Murphy bed in a den and turn it into a guest room in moments when needed.

High platform beds with storage space or drawers underneath are becoming very popular. Bed designers are switching from bulky box springs to sleek and durable platform supports. The elimination of box springs adds another foot of vertical space under your bed that you can put to better use. For a regular king size bed, this create an additional 42 square feet of storage space.

If your spare room is used for purposes you don’t want to give up, you can keep an air bed on hand for guests. An air bed is portable and can be inflated quickly and easily. Air beds provide good support and comfort. Air beds that inflate themselves from a small duffel bag are also available.

Trundle beds, a bed with another bed beneath it, are great in a day room or den for guests or in a child’s room for sleepovers. It can be used as a temporary bed if needed. When you don’t need it, you simply slide it back under the bed to free up space. You can do away with cots and fold-out beds with a trundle bed on hand.

Day beds are used as couches in the daytime and as beds at night. They are great for apartments, dens, guests rooms, and girls’ rooms. You can find many different attractive styles and sizes.

Captain's beds can greatly maximize storage space in your child's room. The higher bed frame with dresser drawers beneath frees up more floor space for other activities and furnishings.

Think vertical in planning your interior design to double the useable floor space in your home!
