New Mattress Basics
Finding a comfortable mattress that provides a
much-needed night of rest is of great importance in a society that is
already filled with sleep-depraved people. Therefore, it is even more
important to maintain the perfect mattress, once found, in order to have
years of restful sleep ahead. These are helpful tips you will need
in order to keep your mattress in good condition for many years to come:
Airing your mattress
Most new mattresses will contain an odor. In most cases, these odors are
natural and not harmful, but it may be distracting when trying to sleep.
Therefore, a new mattress should be placed in a clean, dry area where
the sun can reach it. Having a fan simultaneously blowing on the
mattress will help speed this process.
Preparing your mattress
A new mattress should be placed on a firm base to provide it with the
proper support. A saggy base will result in a saggy mattress, which will
lead to deformities in the mattress and a poor night’s sleep for the
user.
A mattress should never be simply placed on the floor. The colder
temperatures closer to the ground, combined with the dust and pollens on
the floor, will cause the mattress to wear out faster. The lack of
support will also cause the mattress to provide less support because the
floor does not provide the same resistance and firmness provided by a
bed frame.
Turning your mattress
To reduce sag and to ensure a long mattress life, a mattress should be
turned regularly. A new mattress should be turned every two weeks for
the first two months. Thereafter, it should be turned every four to six
months.
To turn a mattress, flip it over and turn it around so the top of the
mattress is now at the bottom. Most mattresses include handles on the
side to make the process of guiding the mattress into place easier.
These handles are not, however, meant to support the mattress weight
when lifting it. Therefore, they should not be used for this purpose, or
they may rip.
It is important to note that some mattress manufactures make one-sided
mattresses. These mattresses cannot and should not be flipped, but they
can still be rotated regularly.
