Choosing the right mattress

Innerspring Mattresses

The first type of mattress we'll take a look at innerspring mattresses. Innerspring mattresses are generally made using steel coils on the inside of the mattress. They come in different firmness levels to suit the customers individual desires and needs. The more coils that are inside the mattress, the firmer it generally will be.

A man named Heinrich Westphal received credit for inventing the first innerspring mattress in the early 1900's, but he never made any profit from his invention. It took at least 50 years after it's creation, for the innerspring mattress to gain popularity. In the early 1950's, many mattress manufacturers like Simmons, Spring Air, and King Coil developed innerspring mattresses, even making king and queen size innerspring mattresses. In an effort to increase the price per mattress, manufacturers promoted more expensive innerspring mattresses, made with heaver steel coils, making the mattress more firm. Many people caught on to the "firmer is better" concept, and it's still widely accepted today. In 2005, innerspring mattresses are one of the most purchased mattress types sold world wide, contributing to 80 percent of total mattress sales.
