History of the Mattress The last two hundred years In 1857, the steel coil spring was invented. This later led to the invention of the box spring in 1865. Though still lumpy, the box spring made the mattress far more comfortable. In 1873, the first marketed waterbed, which looked like a large water bottle, was invented. It was invented by a doctor who was hoping to provide more evenly dispersed back support. It wasn’t until 1895, however, that these waterbed mattresses began to slowly sell, but this design never became popular. In the 1930’s, the innerspring mattress and pocket spring mattresses were developed. The futon was introduced in the United States as an alternative mattress in the 1940’s, followed by the foam rubber mattress in the 1950’s. In the 1960’s, the first modern day waterbed was invented. The airbed followed in the 1980’s. Yet, the innerspring mattress has remained the most popular mattress choice to this day. In 1987, the first bed to offer an inner core of air that could be inflated and deflated at will was introduced. This core of air gave the user the ability to adjust the firmness of the mattress to fit his individual needs. Further technology has allowed the user to make one side of the mattress firm while the other side of the mattress remains soft, making it ideal for couples who want to share the same mattress, but desire a different level of firmness. Today Today, the innerspring mattress remains the most popular mattress choice, though consumers have a wide variety of mattress choices to pick from. Modern mattresses come in a variety of sizes, with the smallest of the standard sizes being the twin, or single, followed by the double, or full sized, mattress. The next largest size is the queen-sized mattress, then the king-size. Since the introduction of the innerspring mattress, the twin has proven to be the most popular sized mattress. Recently, however, Americans have been showing their preference for a larger sleeping space, with the queen-sized mattress taking the lead in mattress sales. Americans have also shown a desire for a variety of choices in mattress. Today, mattresses can be firm, soft, and everything in between. Consumers have the choice of selecting the mattress that best suits their needs and sleeping position. Mattresses are also made with a variety of fabrics, with the outside being available in traditional ticking, or being covered in more luxurious fabrics, such as silk. Vibrating mattresses and mattresses with adjustable positioning are even available. Modern Americans have also developed a variety of extras for their beds, from lace coverings to special storage areas beneath and around the bed. Beds and mattresses have become more than just a place to rest – they are both a functional piece of furniture and a status symbol.
