Flotation Mattresses Another common mattress type is a flotation mattress, or better known as a waterbed mattress. The first waterbed mattress was patented in the late 1800's, by a man named Dr. William Hooper. He invented the mattress with hopes of easing pressure sore pains for his patients. Unfortunately for Dr. Hooper, the original experiment had little success. Waterbeds were made more readily available in the 1980's, and became an instant fad. These waterbeds mattresses had heaters, unlike the waterbed mattress Dr. Hooper invented, to warm the water to at least body temperature. Waterbed mattresses, or flotation mattresses, have had positive medical benefits, and their sale's rates are growing. Studies have shown that around 30 percent of all people suffer from some sort of sleep disturbance. On an innerspring mattress, the average person tosses and turns approximately 60 times in a night to relieve pressure point discomfort. The total body support of foam mattresses, and waterbed mattresses, could minimize the discomfort, and get rid of the need to change positions while sleeping.
