Platform beds, frequently favored by
young city professionals and college students in dormitories, are
becoming more and more popular these days. One reason is that they are an excellent way to maximize space, which is important when floor area is limited. In addition, most platform beds include storage boxes beneath the platform, further increasing the available space. One of the greatest advantages of platform beds is that they are simple in design and easy to construct. Even people with modest construction skills can manage to build one. You can get plans off the Internet or at a bookstore, among other sources. Specialty stores for woodworkers often have instruction booklets on various projects. When you’re ready to create your own platform bed, you’ll need to get some sturdy materials together. Some materials commonly used in building a platform bed are wood, plywood, deck screws, carriage bolts, nuts, washers, wood plugs, finishing nails, lag bolts, and lock washers, the number and size of each depending on the size of the bed you’re making. However, before you decide on a plan and start to build your platform bed, here are some reminders: Check out the room first and plot the space where you will put the bed. Measure the space accurately, and be sure to allow for the rest of the furniture in the room. Take your time and visit different hardware stores and compare prices. Shop around for the best deals to acquire the needed materials. To the extent possible, make sure you have everything you need before you begin work on your bed. Second, before you start cutting the wood for the bed frame, make sure you have made allowances for the mattress. You want to be able to fit a standard-size mattress in your frame. It should fit the frame snugly, yet allow for ease in changing the sheets. You don’t want to have to use a small twin mattress in a large frame or force a full or queen mattress to fit inside a small frame. It would buckle or spill out over the sides and look unattractive. It might also not be as comfortable as a properly fitting mattress.
