Choosing the right mattress

While platform beds typically have simple, elegant lines and a Zen-like low profile, they are also available in a wide selection of styles, sizes, materials, and colors.

Many people are attracted to their simplicity; a basic platform bed consists of a platform and a mattress, with no box springs, no headboard, and no footboard.

You can buy a very boxy platform, a contemporary “bow” platform with modern legs, a Japanese-style platform with slightly curved lines reminiscent of the Han dynasty, and hundreds of other variations. Japanese platform beds have gently swooping lines reminiscent of the architecture of pagodas or curved Samurai armor. The gentle curves combined with straight, Zen-like lines are said to promote good fortune, well-being, and health.

You can also use Japanese tatami mats made of straw on your platform bed. While these mats are designed to keep people and objects separated from the floor, in this case you would use it on the bed frame. The Japanese have special rules regarding the construction and use of tatami mats. For example, they should not be made in a crosshatching design, and when more than one is used, they should be aligned in the same direction. Also, when more than one mat is laid on the floor, they should not touch each other. When tatami mats are used for beds, the rules are similar. For example, if you place two tatami mats between the frame and mattress, they should not touch. These rules are seen to promote the optimal flow of subtle energy in the room, thus promoting health and well-being.

Expect to pay at least a few hundred dollars for a high-quality Japanese platform bed. Of course, depending on the material and artwork, you can find Japanese platform beds that cost thousands and even tens of thousands of dollars. Are platform beds worth it? Worldwide, millions of people think so!
